[net.unix] root's home directory

kas@sun.uucp (Karen Shannon) (03/14/84)

Does anyone know what happens if you change root's home directory
to something other than "/"? I've been told that you shouldn't do this,
but no one I've talked to knows what impact this would have on the
system. The person I'm asking for would like to know why it shouldn't
be done, not just that it can't, so I'd appreciate hearing of any
specific reasons not to change it.

Thanks in advance,
Karen Shannon

I would assume that as long as the directory
is mounted automatically in single-user mode it
should not matter.

We have run V7 with root's home directory elsewhere than "/" for
years. No problems. I can't speak for Berklix (x.yBSD) or Uglix
(System N Release M), though.

Hmmm... On HP-UX, which is USG System III based, the superuser has a
personal directory, /users/root. We've never had any trouble with
it at all, in fact, never considered any other alternative.
