Ok, so I forgot to make my point. Everyone has a bad day. My *real*
point was not that there was a bug in csh but that the K&P book does
not specify which flavors of UNIX or which shells the examples
pertain to. I admit, my letter didn't even approach mentioning this...
but that's because I was half asleep. I attempted to point out
this ?problem? in the hopes that someone would say "that's because
the example was for the bourne shell" but I did it all backwards.
Forgive my inability to express myself... and yes, virginia, i do
understand history... history is the 100+ letters I received from
everyone on the net.
Thank God I didn't post it to net.general.........

Look on page x in the Preface, and page 100 in Chapter 3: Using the shell.
It's all right there in black and white.
I kind of thought net.unix was for asking questions that *weren't*
in the books, not for asking other people to look it up for you.

The K&P book does not specify which shell the examples pertain to for
the same reason that it does not specify which version of ASCII the
example pertain to: there is a well-known standard which people are
supposed to know about.
In areas which are much less standardized, like erase/kill characters
and the output of df(1), K&P is generally fairly careful to point out
possible system-to-system variations.
