We have used MOVIE.BYU from Brigham Young University. It does both color raster and line-drawing output from polygonal data files. Though the algorithms are not as fancy as what you'd find in the latest SIGGRAPH proceedings, I think it's a good way to get started in raster graphics. The price is under $1000 and if you need help getting it to run under UNIX, we might be able to help a little. It's in pretty-much standard Fortran, you have to hook in low-level calls to draw lines, put pixels, and such to your hardware.
