[net.unix] DECNET communication using Unix

eager@amd.UUCP (Mike Eager) (12/13/84)

Is there any way to connect a VAX 750 with Unix to a microVax running VMS in
the same way that they would be connected if the 750 ran VMS. DECNET will
link the two.

Does anyone know of a DECNET simulator for Unix?

Having just returned from DECUS, I expect there will be other messages
with this answer, but maybe I'll be first.

On the demo ultrix-32 machine, there was a decnet thing running. It
was runnning over an ethernet to the rest of the dec network that was
being demoed. I sat at a terminal server and said "connect foo" and I
was talking to VMS, then I said "set host bar" and I was talking to
ultrix. Then I said "cterm fratzn" and was talking to another VMS.
Neat, and it only crashed a few times!!

The official word was "you CAN hold your breath on this one" - which
is to say that DEC was not making a product announcement, but with it
running, it could only be a matter of "real short" time.

Of course, for those of you running SysV or 4.2BSD, it is very unclear
whether you will be able to do anything (especially SysV, as ultrix
is really 4.2BSD).
