Does anyone have a line on a CHAOSnet package for Berkeley 4.2? It is my understanding that the 4.1 version doesn't run under 4.2 w/o much hacking. It is needed to interface to a local Lisp Machine network. /Walt/ ARPA: Buehring%TI-CSL@CSNet-Relay UUCP: {smu, texsun, ut-sally, rice} ! waltz ! buehring -------

A 4.2 BSD CHAOSnet package is available from Symbolics that works fine. I'd check with them. -michael ellis

When we received Symbolic's 4.2 BSD package, we decided that it required too many kernel mods (This is critical if you have Pyramids, CCI and other non-vaxen 4.2 machines). Also, other boxes that use the ethernet (and gateways) don't work nicely with CHAOSNET protocols. Thus, converting the Symbolics machines to a standard protocol is the better way to go. Here at the S-1 Project, LLNL, we use both Chaosnet and TCP/IP on the same Ethernet. Our 4.2BSD VAXes act as gateways. I had very few problems bringing it up from the distribution tape; although I can see how it would be more difficult on a non-source and/or non-VAX system. If you are not already committed to Chaosnet, however, I would second the suggestion that you convert your Symbolics machine to TCP/IP. -- John Bruner (S-1 Project, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) MILNET: jdb@mordor.ARPA [jdb@s1-c] (415) 422-0758 UUCP: ...!ucbvax!dual!mordor!jdb ...!decvax!decwrl!mordor!jdb

I should have been more specific in my previous query about CHAOSnet for 4.2 Unix. For various reasons we're trying to locate a copy which is free of Symbolics licensing. I've heard there is a public domain version at least for 4.1 but also heard that Symbolics did the 4.2 mods themselves. Switching over to TCP/IP is not an option at this time since it is not yet widly supported on Lisp machines. Any pointers on how to locate *any* PD CHAOS version are greatly appreciated.
