I want to compile a list of

If you have visited a good technical bookstore recently, you'll know
that there are thousands of textbooks available in all branches of
Computer Science. For any given topic, there are often dozens of
treatments by different authors, but usually only one or two of these
is truly outstanding. For me, a great book is one that is
authoritative, complete, accurate, well illustrated, replete with
intelligent examples and exercises, and written in a clear, lucid
style. The author's vision, depth of understanding, and sensitivity to
the needs of the student should come across strongly in their work.
Please send me recommendations for your favorite books. You can also
recommend outstanding articles from journals, but I prefer books since
these are more readily available for purchase. Please include the
following information:
1) Title and the name of the author(s)
2) Name of the publisher and year(s) of publication
3) Level of difficulty / depth of treatment: introductory,
intermediate, or advanced. (A book may span two categories)
4) Briefly describe the merits of the book. If you are familiar with
other works on this subject, tell why you think this one is the best.
Please reply by mail. I will summarize and post a list to `net.cse'.
