In the 6 or 7 years that I've been using unix I've seen a veritable cornucopia of p.d., free, and low cost unix software. I've also seen some really expensive software for unix. Most of the former (low cost or free) has been on the Usenix tapes or from the net. Others as well as myself have really benefited from this software. Most agree that this cooperation on cheap/free software is one of the great strengths of unix (or, more accurately the unix community). Now my question: is there a really good list of what is out there? Yes, there are lists from some of the Usenix tapes, and some vendors publish lists of software one can BUY, but is there a good list of what's available cheap or for free? I realize the volume is HUGE, (there are now how many Usenix tapes alone?) but perhaps someone has a list. If there is no list, are there any feelings on how many entries such a list might have, and how it should be formated, distributed, etc? Should this be a project of one of the user groups, or of the net, or of a user (or users), or is it just too big to handle? Any ideas, etc are welcome. --john -- John McDermott {gatech|ucbvax|convex|pur-ee}!unmvax!mcdermot Univ of NM W (505) 277-4650 Albuquerque, NM 87131 H (505) 255-7796
