[net.unix] summary of replies to my ultrix query..

oz@yetti.UUCP (Ozan Yigit) (04/29/85)

Due to the large number of requests for a copy of responses I
received on ultrix, I feel that it is worthwhile posting a summary.

	o ULTRIX is bug-compatible with 4.2BSD (:-E]).
o DEC phone support for ULTRIX and ULTRIX application center
	  is very good.
o Error logging is much improved, so that DEC CE can actually
make sense out them without having to call BERKELEY.
o System installation is Q/A driven.
o According to some, ULTRIX is slow. (I personally do not
believe this. I actually saw a benchmark comparison of
ultrix vs 4.2 on same configuration. ULTRIX rated 15-20%
faster. I will try to find the source of this bencmark amongst
	  my great heap of journals..)
o It is best to get ULTRIX on source level, for maximum sanity.
o It appears that DEC ultrix group, with their infinite whizdom,
removed the fork() call. I am not yet sure of the significance
	  of this.
o Ultrix includes a MODULA-2 compiler. It is also rumored to have
	  DECNET support.

According to my knowledge, ULTRIX 1.1 is not yet released. It may be
worth while to wait and review this all over again.

You've got to be kidding! Have you ever had a serious problem yet?
I had a couple of questions on an RA81 driver (which DEC wrote!) and
they couldn't answer anything. They couldn't even find someone who could.
They were even useless on installation instructions (this was before
I realized how much Ultrix is 4.2). Sheesh! Maybe they could help
you but I don't call anymore... I just guess.

We're on both the Enet (DECnet) and UUCP with *our* Ultrix, so this may
be more than just a rumour... :-)
