[net.unix] XMODEM

Anyone out there have a program that emulates the CP/M XMODEM protocol
	for 4.2 ??

there is a version for VMS (in Fortrash) available from DECUS that most
likely can be ported to UNIX

Oh, come on now. Let's not go porting FORTRAN to Unix just to use
XMODEM! The UMODEM program I wrote for Unix years ago (and added to
by many others since then) has been generally available for a long,
long time. I'm sure it's still on SIMTEL20 and probably about
80% of the Unix systems on the net.

What about UMODEM? I assume it runs under 4.2. (I don't know, we only have
v7.)

There are also two programs written for Unix, umodem.c and uc16.c. I use
umodem fairly often (it uses checksum protocol). I ran into trouble with
uc16.c (CRC protocol), and haven't got it to work yet. I don't know what
its trouble is. If you'd like a copy of either, let me know. And yes, we
are using 4.2 here.

Porting any Fortran code to a UNIX environmrnt should be termed more
than 'gross.' The only redeeming value I have ever found found in Fortran is it
pointing out the speed discreepencies between a VAX 11/750 and a CRAY II. But
then again we know that Cray's are fast. So what's the point of finding that a
non-linear programming program imlemented in Fortran takes three days to run on
a VAX 11/750 but only 20 SECONDS on a Cray II.

The most popular such program is "umodem." I'll be glad to send a copy
if someone already hasn't.
