Our organization is planning a conversion from DEC's RSX-11M operating
system to Unix* on our PDP 11/44. I'd like to raise several questions to
the experts about the conversion.
But first, the hardware details:
CPU:
PDP-11/44 with 1.5Mb RAM, cache, FPU, and battery backup
Disks:
1 DEC RA81
3 DEC RL02's
3 DEC DK05's
Tapes:
1 TU80 1600 bpi
1 DEC TU58 cartridge tape drive
Communications:
32 DZ-11 lines
1 Vadic 1200 baud modem
1 Vadic 300 baud modem
1 DEC remote diagnostics setup
Misc:
1 DEC lineprinter
1 Zeta 1553 plotter
DEC AR-11 Analog to Digital Hardware
Now for the questions:
(1) How can I convert all my old data for Unix usage?
The disks are in DEC's Files-11 format and our backup tapes
are done in DEC's BRU (Backup Restore Utility) format.
(I have ansitar(1) and have heard about f11r(1). Pointers?)
(2) Our present system is also used to backup data from a PDP-11/34
running RT-11. (This is one use for the RK05's) Can this be done
under Unix?
(3) We have plenty of disk space and physical disks. What are some
strategies for effectively laying out and administering the Unix
filesystem?
(4) What are some recommendations for a binary licensed version
of Unix for PDP-11's? (I am leaning toward DEC's Ultrix-11)
(5) The RSX filesystem uses version numbering for identically
named files. (e.g. file.dat;1, file.dat;2, etc.)
Is there a hack out there somewhere to handle this under Unix?
(6) Is there someone out there who has done a RSX to Unix conversion?
