[net.unix] Number Crunching Hardware?

km@emory.UUCP (Ken Mandelberg) (08/04/85)

We are currently preparing a grant request to add some number crunching
hardware to our Vax 750/FPA/4.2BSD configuration. Neither the means,
nor the precise requirements are firm as yet.

This letter is a fishing trip for suggestions. I see the options as
either being some Vax hardware (maybe an array processor on the
Unibus), or some external computational node(s) networked to the Vax
(maybe a Celerity, microvax, or a hypercube).

The budget limit is about $100K. The crunchers use Fortran, so this
must run well on the new hardware. A solution that added to our
horsepower for compiles at the same time would be desirable.

The last time I looked into array processors (a few years ago) there
seemed to be nothing around that talked to Unix.

Any suggestion or pointers would be appreciated.
