This is a summary of the responses I recieved to my inquiry about
the TEX formmatting program. My questions were what is it, and
where can I obtain it? Much thanks to those credited here for the
information.

The comments above are mine and do not reflect light very well, therefore
have poor photographic properties and (sh/c)ould not be associated at all
with Eastman Kodak or anyone else at/in this relative space and time.

What TeX is, is Donald Knuth's typesetting program, probably the most
sophisticated text formatter in the world today. Once you get to know
it you'll never go back to troff, or whatever you use now. It incorporates
several real breakthroughs in various aspects of the task. For example,
the long-endured hyphenation problem has finally been solved (really!).

TeX for Unix is available for $75 from the Unix TeX Site Coordinator:

TeX is a document production system that is designed to make *very* pretty
output on nice laser printers and phototypesetters. TeX was designed by
Donald Knuth for the typesetting of math equations.

The information you are most interested in however is how to get a copy of
it. TeX is basicly public domain and is distributed for a copying fee
of (I think) $200. You can contact Richard Furuta (Furuta@Washington.ARPA)
for information on Sun distribution. The tape includes Computer Modern
Roman fonts, TeX, LaTeX (scribe like macros), a dvi previewer, and printer
drivers for Imagen, QMS, and a bunch of other printers. We have a driver
for Xerox 2700 (II) laser printers if you need that.

Cheers,

Mark Verber, Ohio State University

TeX is a freeware typesetting system written by Donald E. Knuth of
Stanford University. The Unix distributions are handled by Rick Furuta
at the University of Washington. Send mail to unix-tex-request@washington
for details (I think they charge something like $75 to ship a tape).
Be warned that it is a fair amount of work to bring up and you need
a supported typesetter or laser printer (forget line printers and
printing terminals).

You can also order printed GNU Emacs manuals from the Free Software
Foundation for $15 a copy. Mail to wegrzyn@mit-prep for details.

I assume you already read net.emacs.
