[net.unix] Several requests related to networking and phototypesetters

wedgingt@udenva.UUCP (Will Edgington/Ejeo) (09/02/85)

Sorry if you've already seen this; the first try got rejected by our
feed due to software problems (they had just upgraded to a new version
of their operating system) as far as I can tell.
We at the University of Denver have just acquired Ethernet hardware
for our 2 VAX 11/750's. One runs BSD 4.2, the other Ultrix-32 v1.0. Both
will be switched to BSD 4.3 eventually, but there probably won't be time to
change both before our fall quarter starts, depending on when we get it.
We have also just bought Ethernet hardware for one of our VMS (4.1) VAXs
(five 11/750s and an 11/780 in a cluster). There is also a Pyramid 90x
running OSx, a combination of BSD 4.2 and System V, on campus. All but
the Pyramid are in one room; the Pyramid is about two blocks away. Most
of the campus is connected with cabling I'm told is sufficient for some
sort of broad-band ethernet, including the Pyramid and a phototypesetter
(which is about a block from the Pyramid). We have source code licenses
for Version 7, System V v2r2, BSD 4.2, and BSD 2.9 (we also have a PDP 11/70).
We also have source code on the Pyramid and as much source for VMS as DEC
allows (it was on microfiche, last I heard). We can thus modify just about
anything, if we have to.
First, does anyone have a driver for DEUNAs that works under BSD 4.2 ?
Public domain is preferable, but low cost ones are not out of the question.
Second, does anyone have a public domain implementation of TCP/IP for
VMS 4.1 ? How about any evaluations of ones that aren't public domain,
like Wollongong's ? How about UUCP for VMS ?
Third, is TCP/IP enough for remote logins, mail, file transfer, etc. ?
If not, what else is usually used on top of TCP/IP ? Also, are there any
alternatives to TCP/IP that are either public domain or at least cheap ?
Note that we've decided to stay with BSD rather than switch to Ultrix, so
DECNET (unless there's an implementation for BSD 4.[23]) is NOT acceptable.
Fourth, I've heard rumors that a phototypesetter can be used over an
Ethernet connection. We happen to have a 'Compugraphic EditWriter' that
is available for such use. How can it be done ? What kind of hardware is
required ? Software ? A special terminal driver ? We have System V; I've
found out recently that it has ditroff on it. Would ditroff be enough ?
Does anyone out there have a 'TERMCAP' (I don't know the correct word) for
a Compugraphic EditWriter for use by ditroff ? Driving tables for troff ?
Thanks for any help you can give !!
