Another problem with homework in the form of programs is that it is fairly easy to alter a working program in such a way that the new copy of the program looks very different, but is identical except for identifier names and format. I've heard that their are programs which will compare two programs syntactically that are sometimes used when cheating is suspected. The person who made the comment about students not knowing how accurate his statements in class are should realize that many students read these bboards.
