One very good reason for requiring names to be longer than 1 character is that it reserves one character names to the user for personal aliases. I don't have any great objection to these rules except that the rules requiring options to come before operands and disallowing ordering of options are going to require large changes in the command lines for common utilities (e.g., sort).
