I have been told that Hayes modems can not be made to work properly with uucp because the Hayes modem will intercept and munge some sequences of characters that uucp sends. Is this true? Has anybody made uucp work with Hayes modems? -- Bruce Karsh U. Wisc. Dept. Geology and Geophysics 1215 W Dayton, Madison, WI 53706 (608) 262-1697 {ihnp4,seismo}!uwvax!geowhiz!karsh

I have used a hayes on a Sun for months with no problems at all. I have used a courier 2400 on a masscomp for a couple of months using a hayes dialer subroutine (in uucp) and had no problems. So, from my perspective, there are no problems using a hayes with uucp. Is this true? Has >anybody made uucp work with Hayes modems? pesnta has used Hayes 1200 modems for a couple of years and they do the job of pushing news/mail/uucp quite well. If the Hayes sees one second of dead time, followed by +++ and another second of dead time, it will go 'command mode' and that will cause a uucp timeout. This should be rare.

Hayes modems work fine. They are also very configurable. We have uucp turn off the '+++' toggle to command mode. Bye setting the proper dip switches and sending the proper set-up commands you can drive the Hayes with tip and uucp very nicely.

My "Hayes compatible" (Prometheus ProModem 1200) has a switch that disables command recognition. (I found this out when I accidentally hit it!) Depending on your model of Hayes, it might also? -- Joe Yao hadron!jsdy@seismo.{CSS.GOV,ARPA,UUCP}
