[net.unix] PC/IX views?

ir320@sdcc6.UUCP (ir320) (11/23/85)

I posted an article a while back about trying to set up a UNIX box.
I have now discovered PC/IX. What is it? How good/complete is it
compared to XENIX/UNIX V/BSD? Will it run on an XT? How well?
Is it even worth considering?

No. As a 4.2bsd user, I found it both slow and ugly. Xenix is much better,
though not without its problems.

What are you running 4.2bsd on, an XT??? I doubt it.

Enough of the irritability, now for the review:

I have been using PC/IX on my XT, and for what it costs, you get
a complete System III implementation. It runs well and contains excellent
documentation. It would seem slow(when you compare it to a VAX :-), but the
compiler produces better code that XENIX did. The only complaint I have had
is that my notes system eats up my disk space. It churns out about 285
drystomes in real time in a pseudo-quiesent system.

PC/IX (currently at Release 1.1) is a version of IS/3 that runs
on the IBM PC with Fixed Disk Expansion, the IBM PC XT, the IBM
PC XT/370, and the IBM PC AT. (IS/3 is INTERACTIVE Systems
Corporation's version of UNIX System III; to within hardware
restrictions, it is a proper superset of UNIX System III.)

PC/IX was developed by INTERACTIVE for IBM, who has been selling
PC/IX since April of 1984. PC/IX is described in "Personal
Computer Interactive Executive: General Information Manual," IBM
form GH20-6247, available from IBM. PC/IX is sold by both
the IBM direct sales force and the IBM Product Centers.

PC/IX has received a number of very favorable reviews in the
press for its reliability, performance, and completeness.
