On our ATT 3b2/300 UNIX Sys5.2 'cron' dies...apparently after
many hours of cpu time...It is doing a 'sync;sync;sync' every
minute and other stuff...i.e. it is running lots of commands
often. Is this a known bug? Does it happen on other systems?

I have had the same problem since I too have a very active cron,
for me the problem lied in the logfile that cron keeps. As the
default ulimit is 2048 (1Meg), when the logfile exceeds that size,
cron suffocates. The soloution is to clean out the logfile once a
week (or day if you're really busy). It is /usr/lib/cron/log.
