[net.unix] TCP/IP for SysV?

ansok@ucbvax.berkeley.edu (12/20/85)

Some time ago, I posted a question to info-unix asking if anyone
had any info on TCP/IP availability for SysV Unix (for a VAX and a
local Ethernet). So far, I've only received one response (plus three
"let me know what you find out"s), so I'll repeat the question to the
wizards:

Is there any TCP/IP support available for SysV Unix? Does AT&T
support this? If not, what third-party software is available? (and
mini-reviews if you have any experience.)

The only response (from Dave Curry -- davy @ purdue-ecn.arpa) said
that AT&T was "working on it" in three separate groups and it should
be ready (we all know about availability dates :-) in the spring of
'86. I had previously heard both that AT&T did and did not support
TCP/IP. So, anyone out there have any more information?

The Wollongong Group has such a product. We use it on System V vaxes
(you do not need AT&T source licenses), on our amdahls (large IBM look alikes)
running uts (unix) and on some of our other machines. It is basically the
Berkeley socket code put into a "net" device driver, and library
routines that emulate the Berkeley system calls. We talk to 4.2
machines and VMS with this software over ethernet.

CMC in Santa Barbara also has sys V driver level code that supports
sockets and TCP/IP. A lot of the socket operations are done on their
ethernet board. I don't know how well it works on a vax since I'm
porting it to a 68000, and since its such a bastardized unix lookalike
I can't tell you much more than the code seems well written and easy
to follow. Their phone number is (805) 963-9471
