[net.unix] Kermit

walt lazear <lazear@mitre.ARPA> (11/08/84)

Does anyone know of a version of Kermit for either the
Zenith 150 micro or the Honeywell 6000 mainframe? Please
mail replies directly to me.

Although the kermit information in the article I am replying to is
(as far as I know) correct, I find it easier to get kermit and kermit
information via computer networks.

I don't think there is currently a kermit version for the IBM System 38.

There is an info-kermit mailing list, gatewayed onto usenet as
mod.protocols.kermit. (formerly fa.info-kermit) This list
anounces new versions, discusses bugs, protocol enhancements, etc.
Subscription requests should go to info-kermit-request@cu20b.columbia.edu,
submissions to info-kermit@cu20b.columbia.edu.

Arpa: Anonymous ftp ker:aaread.me (I'm not sure of the name, but it starts
with aa) from cu20b for instructions on how to get files.

Bitnet: There is a bitnet server that has most versions of kermit (slightly
behind arpanet). I'll post how to get help if there is interest.

Uucp: okstate has an anonymous login to distribute kermit. I'll post details
if there is interest.

Tapes: Tapes of all current versions are available from columbia in serveral
common formats. They used to charge $100, but that was when they all fit on
one 1600 bpi tape.

Frank daCruz can answer kermit questions, (at the above request address) but
I'm sure he would apriciate it if you look at the readme files etc. first.

Heres the relevant information extracted from the file ckermi.ann,
(C-Kermit announcements). Ckermi.ann was actually obtained from
okstate using the procedures described below:

The files are on CU20B as KER:CK*.*, available via anonymous FTP. The file
CKERMI.DOC provides user-level documentation as well as a description of the
program organization and hints for adapting it to new systems. Within several
days the files should also be available on BITNET via KERMSRV (to get started
with KERMSRV, type SMSG RSCS MSG CUVMA KERMSRV HELP), and to Unix systems via
UUCP from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK.

Here's how to UUCP to OK State:

You need to set up "okstate" as a site in your "L.sys" UUCP dialing file
using the information listed below. You can then issue the following
command on your system:

	uucp okstate\!/u/kermit/ck\* /usr/spool/uucppublic

(this example will retrieve the new Unix version of Kermit)

The "/usr/spool/uucppublic" is chosen as the destination on your system since
the destination must be WIDE OPEN (drwxrwxrwx) to everyone. You should
not remove files from your uucppublic until the entire transfer is complete
including any redials that are necessary. If you do remove some files
our system may retransmit them, resulting in a higher phone bill for you.

Is there an X25 connection to okstate? I tried several times to call
the number indicated using various ( no doubt including illegal ) modems
but has had no success whatsoever.

I tried all known ( i.e. to me ) american and european modem standards.
