[net.unix] Basic for Unix?

Bill Poser <POSER@SU-CSLI.ARPA> (01/23/85)

Why would anybody want to run Basic under UNIX? Seems like very poor taste
to me.

Maybe they have little programs to write to calculate simple things and
they don't fancy writing them in awk. There are a LOT of little things for
which BASIC is a much more suitable language than anything normally available
with Unix. There are reasons why hardware stores sell hammers in many
different sizes and weights. The same principle applies to tools for
problem solving.

Well, for one thing, BASIC is rather easy for non-computer scientists
to learn. There are also tons of books about BASIC and some simple
programs/games to try with. Let us face it, most of the executives
do not know pointers and structures. If there is a friendly BASIC
"compiler" there to help him/her do some simple tasks, he/she will
be more generous to put more money into the system. And that is our
bread and butter.

Gee, I wish people could understand the same thing about operating systems.

Right on! I've found that usually when people sneer at a language they are
broadcasting their ingnorance.

Well, I've usually found that people who resort to ad hominem attacks do so
because they can't think of any real arguments. Seriously, how many of us are
not familiar with BASIC?

Robert Henderson <hender@AMES-NAS.ARPA> (02/01/85)

I for one am becoming very tired of the never ending arguments on
c vs pascal vs fortran vs basic vs whatever. Most of the arguments
are of the form of liking your mother's spaghetti sauce... you like
it best because you had it first ( or last or whatever ).

Howabout not wasting my time by not putting any more space wasting
discussions without useful content on the net!

We do. That's why there are v6, v7, system III, system V,
system V release 2 version 2 rev 6 mod3.14 hike!, BSD 2.?, BSD 4.?

*** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR suggestion ***

I have a friend who is trying to install a version of UBC (?) Basic on
a VAX 780 here running 4.2bsd. We currently have the same basic running
on our 750 with 4.1bsd.

This particular version appears to have some nasty memory allocation problems,
among other things. Does anyone have any suggestions for other versions of
Basic (gag) for Unix, or possibly a fixed version of the above?

My dept has a great (well maybe not great, but dependable) version of basic
on a Sperry 1100/81. Unfortunately this isn't an option for my friend.

Please mail me any suggestions. I'll post a followup later.
