[net.unix] WANTED: Information about specific CPU's & applications

leo@sunybcs.UUCP (Leo Wilson) (05/15/86)

<sacrificial line, in case it's still out there>

I am currently involved in looking for a UNIX super-micro for the
company I work for, and I was hoping some of you out there could
give me a little feedback on the following hardware products and
hardware/software configurations:

DEC microvax II (Ultrix)

NCR Tower ( I don't know which one, It's the one that will support
16 users that interests me) (SYS V w/ BSD enhancements)

Data General MV 2000 ( DGUX )

We are currently using an Altos ACS 68000 and running a DBMS from a local
company. It (hardware) is simply too slow for our current application,
and nobody will sell software for it any more, although the two DB companies
whose products I am interested in say that they have UNSUPPORTED versions
of their products.

Our primary application will obviously be some kind of data base management.
I need something that will allow 8-12 salesman types to interactively use
our inventory data base as a sales tool, answering telephone queries
immediately rather than having to call back. Accounting stuff is the secondary
application, and I'd really like to see some office automation stuff
being used, though I'll have to sell the management on that after the DBM
is flying.

I think that UNIFY or Informix are the products of choice for these
applications. I have used UNIFY and think it's great, and Informix is
marketing a 4GL product that might be nice. Speed is imperative. Will
these products work well for say six simultaneous queries on the hardware
I have listed? What kind of memory requirements will I be faced with?
The database will probably average around 10,000 records, around 36
fields each.

I would sincerely appreciate any kind of feedback about these products,
references to comparitive studies, or general impressions by those of
you who know. Please e-mail to me here.

Thanks in advance,

Leo Wilson
