Has anyone had problems with "funny" directories on Ultrix 1.2? It has happened elsewhere ... Soon after we upgraded to ULTRIX 1.2 on a VAX 785, reports started coming in regarding "empty" directories that could not be deleted. It was noticed that the size of the directory was not a multiple of 512. I haven't much time to find out what is going on, but I would guess that the strange size confused readdir. Properly speaking, I guess the filesystem is not corrupted, but it is a bit disconcerting when "ls" doesn't work. Pwd also gets a bit upset when the current directory is not visible in its parent directory. System calls apparently do not care about the directory size, since one could cd to such invisible directories. If additional files with long names were added to the directory, the directory size would increase to a multiple of 512. At this point, one could see that the directory had in fact not been empty; files or subdirectories would reappear with ls -l. After that the files and the directory could be manipulated normally. DEC's Ultrix support in Colorado said that it was a known problem which would be fixed in the next release. The only system utility they could think of that would be seriously affected is fsck; lost+found must be the right size. ouch! -- Mike Murphy L'administrateur Sans Soucie ..!ihnp4!harvard!bunny!mm06 mm06%gte-labs.csnet@relay.cs.net
