I'm sorry to see yet another uninformative VMS vs. UNIX debate in this *UNIX* newsgroup. This seems to recur annually. All operating systems have weak points, and some have strong points too. The most notable weakness of VMS is that it runs only on a single vendor's machines, machines that were not cost-competitive for several years. UNIX applications permit much more effective shopping-around for systems to run them, since they are not "locked into" a particular vendor. If someone has concrete proposals for improvements to UNIX, perhaps based on ideas from VMS, let's hear them. But plain expressions of personal preference for VMS are not helpful.
