[net.unix] mail's ignore command

mdf@osu-eddie.UUCP (Mark D. Freeman) (06/27/86)

I get lots and lots of mail. Most of the actual messages are only a few lines
long, but have these absurd 20 line machine-generated headings on them. Lots
of lines telling me what time and date every machine between Columbus and
California has seen this message. I read my mail at 1200 BAUD, and this is
really annoying. I came across an 'ignore' command in the main man page, but
noone at my site knows how to use it.

The idea being that I could put a line in my .mailrc file that would have
mail omit the lines starting with "Received:" and "Message:" and other things
I'd rather not see unles I specifically ask for them. Theoretically, the
t and p commands should ignore the ignored heading lines, and the T and P
commands should show everything.

How do I implement this? We are running 4.2bsd on a VAX 11/750.

I do not normally read this group, so mail replies would be appreciated (even
if I have to read all those header lines in your message :-)

Thanks.

The following are sample lines to be placed in .mailrc. I am using the last
one.

ignore received message-id posted-date article-id originated-from resent-date resent-from
ignore Received Message-Id Status Date From
ignore Message-Id Received Via Date Status Resent-Date Resent-From Resent-Message-Id
ignore date from message-id received return-path status
ignore date received status from message-id
ignore received posted-date status message-id
ignore received message-id posted-date article0id originated-from resent-date resent-from in-reply-to date via status resent-message-id

I suppose that one could ask to ignore the To field as well, except it
wouldn't help in cases where one is being sent a copy of a message via the cc
or bcc options

Thanks to everyone who replied.
