it seems that whenever we are faced with a problem, the logical place to turn is the net. ok. the scenario. we are running a 4.2 derivative (ultrix 1.1) on our vax 785. lots and lots of stuff checked in to rcs. lots of code aimed towards 4.2-type systems. we have products that are based on system 5 (sco xenix), which were recently ported from system 3 (ibm xenix). now we are faced with this . we have ordered system 5.2 source for the vax. it was originally ordered just to have when faced with xenix problems that were not easily solved (i.e., the tty driver changed quite a bit from ibm system 3 to sco system 5). we have been tossing around the idea of loading system 5 onto the vax for our devel- opment environment. a lot of engineers are screaming at the top of their lungs ;-) about the incompatibilites of system 5 and BSD, espec- ially the rcs stuff. i am faced with the task of getting the facts in order and presenting them in some reasonable fashion. please, flames to /nev/dull. i would like very much to hear from ``BSD to system 5'' and ``system -> BSD'' sites. the more feedback i get, the happier this engineer will be. so, if you have any facts on the above-mentioned situation, or merely an opinion, i would like to hear from you. and please use mail, as news flows erraticly into minnesota. as always, thanks in advance! ---- -john salmi ...!ihnp4!dicome!salmi ...!caip!meccts!salmi -software & systems administrator -dicomed corporation -minneapolis, mn -612/885-3092 " fast enough never is "

We have both System V and 4.2 BSD boxes. I've started calling the ATT version "System Vanilla" (what else would the 'Vee' stand for?). System Vanilla has sooo little to offer. No networking, no job control, no select(). Yes, it is less of a hack job. That's probably because its less of everything. *Give me 4.2 or give me death* -- Wolfgang Rupprecht {harvard|decvax!cca|mit-eddie}!lmi-angel!wsr
