I am interested in getting Xenix or Unix for my PC/AT. I already know about Xenix availability, but does anyone in net land know whether Unix System V is also available for the AT? And if so, where? Also, if anyone has any experience to report with System V on an AT, that would be appreciated. In particular, does it get the kind of high-level support that SCO reportedly gives Xenix? Thanks. Take a look at Microport's UNIX System V. For a measely 400 bucks you get the *full* V.2 implementation: cc, troff, f77, lint, vi, yacc, lex, terminfo, make, mailx, and even crash. It also has file locking, ipc, semops, shared mem, and 80287 support. The kernel comes optionally with relocatable .o files so you can link in your own stuff. It supports the large memory model, and so far it has worked with every single source that has come off the net, even netnews 2.10.3 :-). Benchmarks: Sieve 2.7 secs, Dhrystones: 1800 (8Mhz PC AT) Some caveats: o The price is going up. How much? I dunno. o I had to wait 6 weeks to get my shipment. Although they seem to be catching up the backlog now. o You need a large disk, especially if you expect to hold things like man pages or netnews. I recommend getting a 60 megabyte Priam (Vertex V170), circa $1300. o You need lots of memory. I recommend at least 2 megabytes. Total price is $400 for a 3 user license. An 8 user license is $40 extra. They have a product called System V/AT and the complete package including full development system, text processing system, 'C', 'f77', uucp, cu, etc... is less than $500.00, yes you read correct!!! less than $500.00. The compiler (C) is supposed to be excellent from what I hear and they even include 'csh' and 'more' and 'vi'.... I suggest giving them a call, I have used SCO and I have just placed an order for this exciting new product. I've had it with the poor support from SCO for their Xenix/Unix product line (UUCP huh gee what's that???). They also give you over 2000 pages of documentation, although I havn't seen the packaging as yet. >Also, if anyone has any experience to report with System V >on an AT, that would be appreciated. They're either supplying the V.1 version, or bundling DWB in with their V.2. If the latter, you should be getting "ditroff" and "pic" as well. -- Guy Harris {ihnp4, decvax, seismo, decwrl, ...}!sun!guy guy@sun.com (or guy@sun.arpa)

Yes, you're right Guy, and they are... this excerpt comes directly out of one of their technical notes pages of their information packet... The Text Processing Package consists of the complete System V Release 2 Documenters Workbench (DWB). The package is provided with both the new troff (Device independent troff) and the old troff (otroff). Drivers for the HP Laser Jet Printer and Apple LaserWriter will be available in the second quarter of 1986. -- ron@vsedev.UUCP (Ron Flax) UUCP: ..!seismo!vsedev!ron ARPA: vsedev!ron@seismo.CSS.GOV
