[net.unix] 3B5 woes

schoff@rpics.RPI.EDU (Martin Schoffstall) (09/20/86)

Almost a year ago we had proposed to AT&T a bunch of single user 3B2's
(70 Mbytes of local disk) and a 3B5 with a medium amount of disk
acting as a file server and most importantly the user/file administrative
hub via RFS.

We all understood that we would have to wait
for the RFS release but meanwhile we could put the iron to work. Well
low and behold I have been informed that the RFS is tightly coupled
to Release 3.0 which WILL NOT be available for the 3b5 due to its
MMU. I guess we can continue to hang terminals off the 3b5 but no
way in God's green Earth are we going to be able to adminster 20
3b2's without a central Store.....

Would anyone like to comment on moving Streams and RFS back to
Release 2.0 which is what we have running on the 3b5?

[ All in all we are happy with 20 undergraduates on a 3b5 learning
C. Floating point is the only obvious lack. ]
