I've been offered a deal on a new machine and wanted to fly the details by the net and see if anyone has heard good/bad things about the hardware AND/OR software implimentation of Dual's New machines. I.E. the Chaparral line. I currently have a old/aging 83/20 which is good enough for the light work I'm doing on it. (Yes I know the disk is slow as %@%%&&) The new machine sounds good and is close to another machine I was drooling over, the Integrated Systems V8 box. Both are VME based designs using 68020 CPU's and the same memory arch (HSMEM) The IS8 will use either SMD or ST506 disk drives while the Dual uses SMD or ESDI disks (more expensive BUT VELY FAST!!) Dual has been using either a SysV or System 7 Unix mostly and I was mainly wondering if anyone has played with their port on the new hardware. The older SysV I'm currently using works OK (little slow due to bizarre disk driver) but solid. I'm also wondering if the new paging ideas have trickled into their SysV yet or do I have to wait for SysV R3 to hit the streets. It would be a shame to have a shiny new box with fancy hardware able to page and still have to swap due to kernel limitations. Anyway, anyone with some good/bad words on this combo please send them to me.
