[net.music] Dr. L. Subramaniam

Subramaniam is L. Shankar's brother.

He is an incredible virtuoso. He has the title "Emperor among violinists"
in India. I believe that he is a professor at UCLA. If you look
in the "ethnic" section at any decent record store, you're likely
to find some classical music (Indian classical) featuring him.
Most of what he's done recently is a mixture of jazz and Indian.
There's a great album "Garland" that has some incredible playing
on it (I think it's on some Canadian label).
He also plays on he song "Spriritual Dance" that's on the Larry
Coryell album "Standing Ovation".
There's more great stuff on Stu Goldberg's album "Solos-Duos-Trios"
with Coryell.

Recently (the past few years), Subramaniam's stuff has bordered
on pop-jazz (although he hasn't stooped down to the level of
Jeff Lorber). He has one record (an audiophile pressing) on the
Crusader's label and a couple of other things on Milestone (I think).
One of the albums (I think the one on the Crusader's label) is
called "Spanish Wave", another is called "Indian Express". There's
another one that I don't know the name of.
People like Stanley Clarke and some of the Crusaders appear on these
albums.
His most recent album is a collaboration with Stephane Grappelli.
I first heard it in a record store in (of all places) Tel Aviv.
I've since heard some of it on WXRT. Sounds good to me.

i think that L. Subramaniam is not teaching at UCLA (though i could be wrong,
after all i'm in the Computer Science Dept., not Music. he was at CalArts
(the California Institute of the Arts) out in Valencia (about 45 min. north
of LA) last i heard.
