I wish to commemorate a friend of mine who invented what I consider to be one of the few appropriate responses to a suicide: Have a Memorial Wienie Roast. The suicide in question was perpetrated in a college environment, and there was much headwagging and tongueclucking and seriousization over the affair, until Norman decided that what anybody glum enough to commit suicide really needed, was a wienie roast. This of course neatly polarized the community into those who thought it a Bad Idea and the Right Thinkers. Roger Hayes (...ucbvax!teklabs!rogerh ...decvax!teklabs!rogerh)

-- yes, and for all of you that may be wondering, I was there, and the idea was not only in abjectly bad taste, it displayed a thoughtless disregard for those most affected by the situation. The division in the community was more like between Norman's best friends, who sought to defend him from the wrathful response, and everyone else. It was quite apparent to me that Norman came to realize the inappropriateness of his response. I still don't think it was funny, and am surprised anyone does.

I was at that school also and I ignored the whole thing.

Many people hold memorial wienie roasts (or whatever other name you prefer) in memory of Jesus Christ on a daily basis. Is this also inappropriate and in bad taste? Most people that do this don't think they are funny, by the way.
