[net.suicide] suicide in A Canticle for Liebowitz

I recently read "A Canticle for Liebowitz" after hearing about it for
some years. As the story progressed it became increasingly imbued with
Roman Catholic terminology and dogma. This culminated in a long catechism
( the only word for it ) on suicide in the face of unbearable suffering,
in this case, massive radiation overdose. A real highlight was a priests
realization that he shouldn't try to reason with a victim but should
assert his Authority, in the name of ... , and order her to tough it out.
( She would have but she fell back into the clutches of the government
mercy killers.)

I was chagrined, not to say disgusted, that this much ballyhooed book
turned out to be such a blatant propaganda piece.
