Like Alan S. Watt, I am not unacquainted with deep depression. I too, was hopelessly confused and dejected when it occurred. Fortunately, with the help of my friend and my umbrella, I have been able to persevere. Of particular help have been certain philosophical treatises. I have one favorite passage from Freud's "The Interpretation of Dreams" that never fails to arouse my flagging spirit, and I am happy to share it with those of you with conditions similar to Mr. Watt's: "This approach has its drawbacks, of course. Most notable is that the complete story on an particular language feature is not found in a single place, and the tutorial, by being brief, may also mislead. And because they can not use the full power of C, the examples are not as concise and elegant as they might be. We have tried to minimize these effects, but be warned. Another drawback is that later chapters will necessarily repeat some of this chapter. We hope that the repetition will help you more than it annoys. In any case, experienced programmers should be able to extrapolate from the material in this chapter to their own programming needs. Beginners should supplement it by writing small, simian programs of their own. Both groups can use it as a framework on which to hang..." Despite the thinly disguised sensuality, this metaphorical exposition on the tormented soul cannot fail to inspire in the experienced programmer a renewed desire to plow fresh furrows in existence. I, after all, am living proof that it works! *<--- chuck --->* cbosgd!ccf BTL Columbus
