[net.suicide] Suicide as a crime

presley@mhuxj.UUCP (06/10/83)

Here's a peculiar tidbit from People's Almanac 2, for what it's
worth. Attempted suicide in Great Britain in the 19th century was
a capital crime. A man tried to kill himself by slashing his throat.
He was sentenced to hang, but when they tried to hang him, the pull of
the rope opened the wound in his neck and he continued to breath.
They finally bound up the neck below the wound until he died.
