Of course it matters that suicide is illegal. For one, it's a basis for a (universal) exclusion in life insurance. I'd guess that alone saves some lives.

As I remember it, life insurance benefits are not automatically voided
by suicide -- only in the first year or so of the policy. i.e. if you
kill yourself after holding the policy three years, the benefit will be
paid. Since I only seem to have "summaries" of the benefits of group
policies, I don't know all the fine print so there may be reduced
benefits for suicide, but even then I suspect full benefits would be
paid if it were proved that you were insane at the time.

It was just mentioned that suicide is a"universal" exclusion with regard to life insurance policies.Not so ! Most policies exclude suicide for a specified period of time.Mine is two years from the date of opening the policy. I expect that a similar time period is enforced if you increase your coverage.
