[net.suicide] Poetry and directions.

karl@dartvax.UUCP (S. Delage.) (06/24/84)

If net.suicide is going to contain only poetry, it may as well
stop using up disk space. No matter how good or bad such verse is,
I don't think that's exactly what this newsgroup is for. In fact,
it's unclear exactly what this is for. The single topic of
suicide, and the reasons for and against it, are not things that
are conduicive to ongoing, let alone ongoing and interesting,
discussion. In fact, in my experience either people are not
interested in the topic, or else they have thought about it in
detail, and the articles are mere rehashings of arguments they
have already considered. That may seem dogmatic, and it certainly
is, in the abstract -- it's unreasonable to categorically state
"I've thought about it already and nothing anyone else has to say
is new". In practice, I have yet to read an article that expresses
a novel thought.

Expressing novel thoughts is not the sole criteria for a newsgroup's
existence on USENET. If it were, we might as well nuke everything! :-)
It provides a forum for expressing opinions as well as rational argument.
I also disagree that discussing suicide directly is the only raison d'etre
for net.suicide. There have been lots of discussions of related topics,
such as psychology or (particluarly) depression. In fact, a couple of weeks
ago, my girlfriend dumped me and I was very depressed about it for a few days.
During that time, I posted an article here just saying that I was very
depressed and wanted some sympathy, etc. from the net. The response to that
article was overwhelming. I would like to take this opportunity to thank
all those who responded. I got over 35 messages. And one new very close
friend. In actual fact, I think it was one of the most beneficial (for me)
uses of the net I have ever made. I got lots more support from the folks
in this group than from my friends here (most of whom thought I should
never have been with this woman in the first place, but that's another issue).
For the record, I feel much better now, and the incredible outpouring of
support from the folks in this newsgroup is one big reason for it, especially
the above-mentioned one in particular. Thanks one and all (pun intended :-)

In conclusion, my reply to you is, if you don't like it, unsubscribe. At
least one person finds a very legitimate and helpful use for this group.
Thanks again, folks.

Can we repeat this feat? My mailbox is empty, and right now I feel my
life is, too. Can anyone respond on the general notion of being kind to
one's fellow human beings just because they are fellow human beings?

Eagerly awaiting replies,

Perhaps you would like something more along the lines of...

Have you ever noticed how hard it is to get to the artery when slitting
your wrists?

Never use natural gas because if you live through it you get a head
ache.

How high does a building have to be before you are guaranteed
that you won't just end up a quadraplegic. And where is the line
between tall enough for certain death and short enough you won't
have time to change your mind in free fall.

What combinations of pills will kill you without making you sick first.
Is Apsirin better than Tylenol for an overdose? Tylenol will destroy your
liver. What will aspirin destroy. Also, don't use Dristan.
You can't kill yourself with Dristan.

And now that I have written this somewhat tasteless message, I'll ask a real
question. Why aren't there many good suicide jokes? (All the authors are
dead!)

No flames please. I already know about Lubbock vs. Texas Tech.

>What combinations of pills will kill you without making you sick first.

The best combination for maximal affect with minimal pain seems to be
barbiturates with a good chaser of something like Jack Daniels. An added
benefit is that people need to be looking closely to tell that you aren't
simply sleeping (if you try it in a group situation or party).

Tylenol is MUCH better for overdoses. The body has significantly less
tolerance to large doses of ingredients. My mother, who works in a
hospital, says that they are constantly seeing people coming in with
Tylenol overdoses (this isn't Tylenol specific, BTW. Many aspirin free pain
relievers use the same ingredients). Tylenol also reacts more strongly with
aspirin. The pharmacists my mother work with have told the staff to use
something other than Tylenol (or equivalents) because the dosages are much
more critical and they simply don't trust it under all circumstances
because there is such a (relative) fine line between getting rid of your
headache and getting rid of your liver (and other body organs).

Every single day, and every word you say, every game you play,
every night you stay, I'll be watching you.

How do you get barbiturates? Is is difficutlt to convince a doctor
you are having sleeping problems? When I have said I can't sleep,
they tell me to drink warm milk and take long walks.

Will enough Tylenol really kill you? How much?

chuqui@nsc.UUCP (Chuq Von Rospach) (07/17/84)

Decent doctors have gotten away from both barbiturates and tranquilizers.
Both have lots of interesting side effects that smart people stay away from
(smiling while staring at walls for days at a time is a good one). That
makes it harder to find legal sources for them. Not so legal sources are
still relatively easy, of course. Just ask your local pusher. (The street
name used to be 'reds').

I don't know exact dosages for tylenol toxicity. I suppose I could find out
if someone REALLY wanted to know, but I don't. I DO know that there have
been cases where people have swallowed ~50-100 aspirin (at 500mg/each) and
lived (didn't know you could die from aspirin, did you? *grin*). The
tylenol level is much lower than that so I guess if you can keep a bottle
down (the body usually tries to do something silly like throw up) it should
take care of things. I'd say that under some circumstances (small body
weight with sensitivity) you might cause liver damage with as few as 8-10
500mg pills (remembering that they are available up to 1500mg, I believe).
That is why professionals tend to be real worried about these things. The
margin of error is very small. I'd personally suggest using some other
product. Motrin has just been put on the over the counter list, if I
remember right. I don't know if there is a product using it yet, but it
is safe (I believe) for those that can't use aspirin and isn't nearly as
picky as the Tylenol products.
