[net.suicide] success rates

dragon@lll-crg.ARPA (Monica Cellio) (10/30/84)

Last I heard, about three times as many womn as men try, and about three
times as many men as women succeed. Most of the stuff I've read also claims
that roughly 80% of the people who try to kill themselves don't really want
to (as determined by interviews by doctors afterwards, I suppose). Maybe
these two things are related. Do women tend to communicate in less direct
ways than men? (Women aren't "supposed" to be assertive, though that's
been changing in recent years. Have the statistics quoted above also been
changing recently?)
