Could anyone assist me concerning the "methodology" concerning suicide, specifically regarding how one can relieve oneself from this world in the most efficient and least painful (and most accesible) way possible. I would appreciate any helpful information regarding this. Thank you in advance. "Suicide is Painless?" RLW U of W.

First off, let me say that I firmly believe that suicide is not the answer. This is because I believe that one can never escape the reason that would drive them to suicide. If one buys into the idea of a soul, spirit, etc then the chances are pretty good that you will just carry your problem with you and have to face it another day. The net effect of suicide, therefore, would just be a delay in solving whatever problem you are unable to face. In fact, you might end up in an environment where solving it would be even more difficult! When I was younger and had no significant responsibility, I could not understand how anyone could get so depressed, so upset that they would want to take their life. It seemed to me at the time that they could always just "walk away" from the conflict and start over. Now that I have "grown up" and have considerable responsibility, I can see just how difficult it is to walk away. When I have had thoughts of suicide as a solution for my life, I think about my previous childhood view. I realize that I consider life, the world, my problems, etc to damn seriously! This has helped me a good deal. Throw in the fact that I now believe that I can't escape my conflicts no matter what I do then there is only one course open. The course is to meet the conflict face on, get the upper hand on it and resolve it. On ther other hand, if in fact there are no problems and you are just bored with physical life as we know it and are just interested in getting on to a new adventure, then drop into a little drug store in New York, grap a bottle of Tylenol caps from the shelf and eat um up. There is a finite probabilty that you will be launched off into a new reality. J.R. Miller, AT&T Bell Labs, Columbus.

Anyone interested in this or any of the other topics relevant to this newsgroup owes it to themselves to look up and read the long article on Suicide that appeared 4-5 years ago in the CoEvolution Quarterly. Me and a few of my cohorts consider it the best "magazine" article we have ever read. Still. It covers suicide from a number of different aspects, giving you a strong respect for the task. It is not an article which you can easily put down. The CEQ is now titled The Whole Earth Review, and can be found in many university quality bookstores and newsstands. Order forms for back issues are at the end of each issue. Or you could probably find it at the library.
