[net.suicide] Suicide is No Joke!

cad@cbosgd.UUCP (Chuck A DeGaul) (03/21/86)

Well, I've tried to restrain myself, but, like a foul smelling one-cheek-
sneak, this just got too much to hold in.

>Well, I don't know what their position on "I don't like the world,
>so I'll just hang out on this tree here until I die." is, but if
>there happens to be a Jihad (~holy war) going on (and there always
>seems to be) could anyone assist me concerning the "methodology"
>concerning suicide, specifically regarding how one can
>relieve oneself from this world in the most efficient and
>least painful (and most accesible) way possible. I would
>suggest you steer your friend to the Student Counseling Service or it
>counterpart on campus. If none exists, the Health Service (or counterpart)
>should be of assistance.

Come on people! Don't you see that this sort of tongue-in-orifice sort of
net posting is harmful! First of all there is always the possibility of
doing someone real physical harm by the systematic trivialization of self
destruction. Secondly, you only add to the great bulk of waste "news"
that is sent around this network. Fully 82% of the data bytes sent contain
no information at all, and postings such as the one quoted above merely
add to it. Thirdly, recent submitters, notably Barbara J. Orlando, have
no conception of what they are talking about.

To viscously attack a poster as a two-dimensional object of self-glorification
seems extreme to me. Ms. Orlando should rethink her actions and issue
an apology to the newsgroup. For the life of me I don't understand what
gets into those Ivory-Tower, Scottish Intellectuals!

Finally (my pulse seems to be returning to normal) and just as a legal point,
the claim that posting information to the net that explains how to kill
yourself is "illegal", is specious. While I can understand the poster's
caring attitude, infringement of First Amendment rights is no laughing matter.

So knock it off!

P.S. My uncle shot himself in the back seat of his Eldorado about seven
years ago, with a shotgun. Ruined the trade-in value and really hurt
my aunt. Perhaps if someone had given him a good suggestion via a medium
like this one, things would have turned out a lot nicer.
