I have been using vi for several years now, after several previous
years' experience with an Emacs-like screen editor. Given the
experience with both self-insertion and a separate insert mode, I do
prefer self-insertion. In fact, I once tried to add a separate
front-end input filter to vi to give it a self-insertion user
interface. What did me in was the inability to unify the insert-before
and insert-after commands in vi -- vi won't let
you move the cursor before the first character or beyond the last
character in a line.
Of course, this is purely personal preference. If I *REALLY* had my
'druthers, I'd work with a full-page bitmap&mouse editor/formatter and
leave both vi and Emacs in the dust.
