[net.info-terms] Summary: Call Waiting and Modems

woods@hao.UUCP (Greg Woods) (08/12/83)

Many thanks to the dozens of people who answered my question about what
happens to a modem when the call wait signal comes through. Practically
everyone said that the result is, your line is hung up. One person here
went back to an old archive tape and recalled the discussion on this
subject which apparently occurred on the net about a year ago, and I read
one article from someone at San Diego who had hacked the tty driver to prevent
this. For my own purpose, however, I'll just have to do what most of the
respondents to my question do: suffer with being hung up when someone calls
me. In my own situation, that is preferable to either paying the $100 or so
that Ma Bell charges for installation of a new line in an apartment that I'll
be leaving soon, or to having a constant busy signal when my friends try to
call me. Once again, thanks.
