We bought eight of them about two years ago and ended up selling them to someone else on campus. At that time (if my memory serves me correctly), they were more or less new on the market, and had some nice features. The advantages were: (1) Detachable keyboard, with a nice touch (2) Metal casing for both the monitor and keyboard (3) Underlining mode, half intensity and all that jazz (4) Fully adjustable swivel monitor (5) A reasonable decibel bell level (soft) The disadvantages were: (1) The control, escape, and caps lock (or was it the tab) keys were completely out of place on the left side. I remember always putting my terminal into capital mode when trying to backspace, and getting pretty frustrated when it took a few tries to press escape after an insert in vi. (2) At that time Wyse was having problems with the character set ROMS and the second page of memory. All that I remember is that funny things occassionally happened in vi when you went in and out of vi. We had our hardware guru rewire one of the keyboards, which fixed (1). We also received replacement ROMS which helped fix (2), but never completely. In my opinion, my Freedom 100 (distributed by Liberty Electronics) is one of the best terminal buys today (less than $600 for features comparable to the Wyse 100). If you are interested, send me mail and I will dig up their address. -- uucp: ucbvax!ucsbcsl!discolo arpa: ucsbcsl!discolo@berkeley csnet: discolo@ucsb USMail: Computer Systems Lab U.C. The main advantage to the current Wyse (75, I think) terminal is that the display is INCREDIBLY easy to read - the font is very large and crisp - much better than any terminal I've ever seen (even HP) and comparable to the Sun workstation in standalone mode. I haven't noticed any problems with ESC or CTRL layout, but I'm not using one daily and don't have one in front of me now to check. If you're looking for an inexpensive ($500 or so) terminal with all the important vi features, the Wyse and the Liberty Freedom are both said to be excellent. Among the others you should look at are: (3) the Teletype 5410 (4) the Falco something-or-other (5) The Zenith Z19 (aka Heathkit H19)

I have a Wyse-75 which was purchased 2 months ago. It is advertised as a ANSI standard compatible terminal and it appears to be such. It does have some glitches which they will tell you about if you ask. They are: Support of only one standout mode at a time. (chosen during setup) Non-support of the Double height, or double width features of the VT100. Other then that I haven't had any problems. One of the best features is the 14" screen. It only uses 1/4" margins and the larger letters make long terminal sessions much easier. You should only get a Wyse if the ESCAPE key is unimportant to you. (not that you should get one then...) -- Just another valley guy Phil Ngai (408) 982-6554 UUCPnet: {ucbvax,decwrl,ihnp4,allegra,intelca}!amd!phil ARPAnet: amd!phil@decwrl.ARPA

I am considering purchasing a dozen or so terminals from Wyse technology, and I was wondering if anyone else was willing to share war stories or to bestow great amounts of praise for these terminals. Unfortunately a local dealer for these terminals does not exist, so I cannot just go there and try one out. What I am most interested in is: 1) keyboard feel- is it OK? reliable? 2) Terminal speed on screen writes (how many delays are in the termcap (maybe send me a copy). Are there problems with the X-ON - X-OFF which EMACS stole? 3) glitches in the terminal (space taking magic-cookies, unusable characters [like the dumb Hazeltines], etc.) 4) Any other comments you have on the terminal. 5) Suggestions of other terminals in a simular price bracket ($700). I will be making a descition in a week so a prompt reply would be appreciated. I will post the results of this survey. For the great unwashed Wyse makes four types of terminals WY-50, WY-75, WY-100, and the WY-300 (color). The terminals are relatively cheap (the WY-50 is $695, the WY-75 is $795), and look really good (physically they have a detached keyboard, tilt and swivel 14" screen, and support insert/delete character/line). Their address is 3040 N. First St., San Jose, CA 95134 (800)538-8157 or (213)340-2013. Thanks in advance. Steven Sutphen University of Alberta decvax!ihnp4!alberta!steve
