[net.info-terms] Terminal info wanted

barbee@sdcsvax.UUCP (Don) (08/08/83)

I am in the market for a really nice terminal and I am currently
looking at the televidio 970. I like the ergonometric design, but
it only comes in a green screen; I would like to have an amber screen.

It also has protected regions, but I would like more then just horizontal
protected windows. I am sure that many of you have heard of the idea
of giving a process a window to work in. This way you can keep the
output of one process from corrupting the output of another. On the
970 you can only allocate horizontal bands across the screen. It
would be really nice if you could define an arbitary rectangle for the
process to work in.

I once worked on a ultra high speed terminal going at ~500K baud.
Using a screen oriented editor on this was like a dream come true. It
could redraw the screen sooooo fast that you could blink and miss the
fact that anything had happened.

I am getting the terminal for a S100 based computer. I'd rather have
a separate keyboard/monitor/driver system, but so far I have not seen a nice
keyboard, like the 970 has, by itself anyware on the open market.

I'm in the market for a terminal right now, and I have a few questions.

1. I've been looking at a "Liberty Freedom 100". The dealer seems
to be pretty anxious to get rid of it, so I'm wondering if it has been
discontinued or if Liberty is on the verge of going out of business.
Anyone know?

2. Another possibility is something called a "Visual Technologies V-60".
Does anyone know anything about this one? Does it have add line and
delete line capabilities? As far as I know, it emulates a VT-52, which
isn't smart enough to do those things.

By the way, prices are $435 for the Liberty and $400 for the Visual.
Are these good deals?

We have a couple of liberty terminals. We have a 220, which is a
vt220 compatible, and a 240, which is a vt220 compatible + tek4014
graphics (NOT vt240 graphics). The 220 is holding up fine, and cost
us $360. The graphics board in the 240 (which is made by Selanar)
has gone flaky, but we probably fried it (we have a bad static
problem). I like the terminals fine, but I don't have any info on
Liberty. Our local dealer switched to being a distributor, so we
haven't tried to find anything out yet. The person with the graphics
terminal has been able to live with the flakiness so far, so we
haven't contacted them about repair, since we'd have to ship it back.

Oops, that was $630 for the Liberty Freedom 220, not $360. Sorry
