[net.rec.caves] Didn"t they used to call this spelunking?

jj (06/08/82)

To reply. About 25 people answered my request for people iterested in caving.
I do not count a number of people who were interested but did not actually
cave. It seems like a reasonable turnout to me. Yes, it is called spelunking,
but the word is generally dropped in useful conversation, unless the user
is trying to be pretentious.
In response to comments from a mailed source, the name of the newsgroup is
net.rec.caves NOT ~.~.caving. Sorry.
In answer to you motivation question, caves are one of the few physical
frontiers left to explore, until this government gets off its fanny and
into space.

P.S. How do I mail to you, Mr. Rhodes? the path that occurs in your mote doesn't make it.
In answer to your rock climbing question, the climbing in caves is of a different nature.
It ususally involves belayed climbs that are supported from the top, or free
vertical ropework. Clmibing in a cave is completely different most of
the time, since you have more walls to work with.
