strock@fortune.UUCP (Gregory Strockbine) (05/16/85)

Just out of curiosity does anyone recall these songs:

"I Can Hear the Grass Grow" by the Move

"See Emily Play" by Pink Floyd

The Pink Floyd, sure, the first one - never heard of it.
	Should I?

Didn't the Philadelphia police department just remake this song? I think it
bombed.

Speaking of See Emily Play, a few weeks ago, I was at my friends house,
and that song was on the radio. A big Pink Floyd fan, my friend looked at me,
and said, "You know, that is Pink Floyd." WELL, I'LL BE DARNED... the song had
a cute, jumpy kinda sound to it... I liked it, and wouldn't mind hearing it
again.

Yes. I remember "See Emily Play", but I don't think that I've ever
heard "I can hear the Grass Grow".

Just in case anyone's interested, "See Emily Play" was the second single
released by Pink Floyd. It came out in the spring of 1967. Even at that
stage in their career, Pink Floyd did not want to release any singles or
any kind of music that was aimed at the top 40, but their arms were twisted
by someone (producer, record company or manager, I can't remember which),
so they reluctantly came up with "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play", both
of which had a small amount of success in the British pop charts. However,
the Floyd felt that those songs were too commercial and weren't very
representative of the type of music they wanted to do, so they refused to
include them on their first album ("The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", released
in the summer of '67.) and they refused to perform them in concert, despite
the fact that most of the fans screamed for the familiar hit singles.

David Bowie did an interesting cover of "See Emily Play" on his "Pin-Ups"
album. "Pin-Ups" is made up entirely of Bowie's favourites from the British
scene in the mid to late sixties, songs that were originally done by groups
like The Kinks, The Who, Pretty Things, and other less famous groups that I
can't remember.

Ahhh yes, early Floyd. "See Emily Play" was written by Syd Barret, one of
the founding members of Pink Floyd. He also released a couple of solo albums,
one was called (I believe) "Syd Barret and the Madcap Laughs", but I don't
remember the name of the second one. Syd left Pink Floyd after their second
album and spent some time institutionalized, though I read a few years ago
that he's living outside of those kinds of walls now.

Has anyone heard the version of "See Emily Play" on Bowie's album "Pinups"?

Speaking of See Emily Play (again), last night, I was doing my radio
show (College radio station) and pulled out a Bowie album, the title of
which I believe is Pinups. On this album, Bowie does a cover version of
See Emily Play... in my editorial opinion, it stinks... the chorus is all
lousy... i remember the song the way floyd did it ass being a lot clearer...
are these just fond memories???

Yes, Syd Barrett is no longer institutionalized, but last I heard
he was living with his mother and was incontinent. The whole
of his problems was apparently brought on by too many acid trips.
In fact, I remember one account that said he would stand and strum
the same chord through a whole concert just before the rest
of the band kicked him out. It is also rumored that when Floyd
was doing their "Wish You Were Here" album about burning out
in the corporate music world, Barrett showed up looking like
death warmed over trying to offer his services.

Oh yeah, the name of his other album was simply BARRETT.

And don't forget the real rarity, "Unforgotten Heros". I still haven't
heard it yet, but I may be acquiring it in a couple of weeks!
