[net.music] New Gary Numan releases

dce@hammer.UUCP (David Elliott) (06/01/85)

Today, I grabbed a couple of new Gary Numan releases and saw two others.

The two I bought are "1978 - The Plan" and "1978-1979 - Volume Three".
Both contain "previously unreleased" recordings (though some of the songs
have been released in various forms). (Historical note: These were done
before the first two (fantastic) Beggar's Banquet singles were done.)

"The Plan" is a great album for fans of the first Tubeway Army album. Lots
of those neat distorted guitars and pretentiously oblique lyrics.

"Volume Three" is a blue vinyl "mini-album" (5 songs). Three are from the
same sessions as "The Plan", and the other two are supposedly from the
Telekon sessions (though I would have said that they were recorded around
the time of Replicas).

I would assume that with a "Volume Three", there would be at least one more
set of stuff, and maybe more. Has anyone seen any more of these?

I mentioned seeing two other new Gary Numan releases. My personal
opinion is that Gary's studio work has been pretty awful since "Dance"
(Telekon did have a few good songs on it), so I couldn't bring myself
to buy "Berserker". I have enjoyed his live work (the double live set
from the Telekon tour is really good), so "White Noise", his new live
album might be pretty good. In fact, some of the names of the
musicians looked familiar (Russel Webb?), so it might have some of
the old feel.

I'd appreciate comments on these albums, as well as comments on other
Gary Numan records.

I heard Change Your Mind on some late night mutant radio show - Wow!

Althought the song doesn't have much in the way of variety it does
have the most incredible base line I may have ever heard. I haven't been
thrilled with Numan since Pleasure Principle - a few good ones off
Telekon and maybe 2 off Dance, who knows maybe this is a comeback.
