I have submitted to net.sources a simpler version of a USENET (uucpnet) routing program. There are considerable differences between this version and the version just sub- mitted by unc!smb. Advantages of mine: - No existing system software needs to be altered - The amount of code is small <500 lines verses >2500 - You should be able to get mine up in around 5 minutes Disadvantages of mine: - No cost analysis is done on baud rates or polling frequencies which smb's does. Thus, while mine will give the shortest path, his can possibly find a longer path that will get to the destina- tion faster and cheaper. You should definitely work on getting smb's version up because it is the superior program and will probably be integrated into the rfc address changes. However, this is a quick and easy alternative. Especially if you might have trouble getting your systems people to perform the neces- sary changes for smb's pgm. The best way to go about getting my software up is to: 1) save the files under a new directory 2) do a vi * 3) 4ddZZ:n /* get rid of news headers on the files */ 4) on the last file "sites" make sure that no blank lines exist on the front or end of the file. 5) chmod +x on runme /* make the shell script exec */ 6) runme /* run the shell script */ 6.1) Give your sitename and a filename to keep the topology file in. 7) Send some mail to me or someone. type nmail ucf-cs!tim For some examples of how to use the program and sample input to runme, see Readme in net.sources.
