The "bib" bibliographic software distributed a while back has been considerably revised and altered. Changes are summarized as follows: 1. There were several BUGS in the first distribution that caused it to fail on 16 bit machines. Many (can one hope for all?) of these have been removed. 2. Changes to reference databases. In documents with multiple editors, each editor now gets its own reference line, instead of all editors being given on one line. Also note new options for formatting editors. 3. Changes to formatting macro databases. In addition to the editor change, several string names have also been changed. See the documentation for details. (since updated macros are being distributed, this is only of interest to those who have already created their own formatting macro databases). 4. New options. Options now exist to sort adjacent citations strings to the order they appear in the reference list (this is default), to hyphenate strings of contiguous citations, to format editors indepenent of authors, and to have multiple private index files. 5. The source has been cleaned up considerably. There is now a bib.h file containing useful constants. ALL absolute path names are defined in this file, to facilitate changes in the directory layout. The source for the system is being distributed in three SHAR files. The first file contains source code, including the makefile. The second file contains documentation. The third file contains the formatting database files. Files in the third part must all be placed in the same directory, however this need not be the same directory as the source is placed in (in fact, it probably should not be). Several constants in bib.h need to be altered to point to the directory where the macro files are to live. (On our system, macro files live in /usr/lib/bmac). Bug reports, complaints, and other flames should be directed my way. Will try to respond to the first, dodge the second, and ignore the third. Tim budd (aka) Arizona!budd
