[net.sources] GNU emacs on mod.sources a note from the moderator

john@genrad.UUCP (John Nelson) (03/28/85)

I just got a copy of GNU emacs, and it is large. I am willing to post it to
mod.sources, but it is HUGE (about 20 postings), and I'll be DAMNED (can I
say that on the net?) if I am going to send extra copies of lost portions to
all those sites on the net that have flakey news connections, or spool files
too small to hold the whole thing. (Remember, I've got a job, and a home life,
and I even like to sleep, occasionally). If I DID post it, I would have to
space it out over several days to avoid overflowing the disks on our
neighboring sites (notably, decvax).

Please send MAIL if you have an opinion. I will entertain any suggestions
as to what to do with this. I will post a summary (or a decision, or
something), but I really have a bad feeling about this, and think that a
tape distribution system had got to be less of a hassle.

By the way, if it is APRIL and you are reading this, don't bother to reply:
It is probably too late to influence my decision, anyway.

Being one of the first people to jump up and say 'yeah, post it'
I now am more aware of the size and re-cant [although, of course,
I now have *my* copy so...]. I bow to those who have more experience
with this sort of thing and what a madhouse it could produce.
Obviously if there is a lot of sentiment for posting it than maybe
that's what democracy is all about.

Hey, I may have been wrong and I'm big enough (6'2", 187lbs) to admit
it.

P.S. If you are in the Boston Area and would like to drop by to
fill up a tape with GNU send me email and we'll arrange something.
I'll consider self-addressed stamped tapes (groan, I barely sleep
anymore.) bzs@bu-cs.CSNET
[I'll assume 1600BPI tar unless told otherwise]

Why not at least arrange for some Arpa site to allow FTP access to it,
at least for a week or so??? Simtel comes to mind.

GNU emacs is already available on a number of ARPA nodes.
If you look in net.emacs, net.unix and net.unix-wizards
for the past week or so, you will find information about
getting it. Otherwise, send me some mail and I'll give
	you the relevant information.
