I think the best way out of this one is to have an environmental variable, say VBELL, which, if defined, specifies that a visible bell is to be executed rather than a noisy bell if the TERMCAP entry specifies it. Just the existence of the vb in a termcap should not; I have to carry two termcap entries for every terminal (one with vb, one without). I have modified the Rand Editor to do this. It's probably one of those things that should be in the tty driver itself, but I'm not silly enough to suggest that.... On the same line, the bell character shouldn't be just ^G; there is a termcap for the bell that should be used instead. How many terminals out there use anything other than ^G?
